UNDERSTAND THE SILHOUETTE

Hanfu vs Qipao: what is the difference?

Hanfu and Qipao both appear in searches for Chinese clothing, but they describe different forms of dress. Recognizing the difference makes it easier to find the silhouette you want and to ask useful questions about fit.

Hanfu describes many clothing forms.

Hanfu is an umbrella term associated with Han Chinese dress. It does not mean one specific dress or one single collar shape. You may see combinations of tops, jackets, skirts and robes, with different ways of overlapping and fastening. A complete outfit can contain several separate garments.

In our Hanfu collection, names such as Tang, Song and Ming identify design references. Compare the actual components and silhouette rather than assuming all pieces with the same period label are identical.

Qipao and Cheongsam name a distinct dress form.

Qipao is also known as Cheongsam. A high collar, ornamental fastenings and side openings are familiar features in many examples, although designs vary. A Qipao is commonly considered as a dress rather than the layered combinations often found in Hanfu outfits.

Modern interpretations may change the cut, length, sleeves or closure, so the name alone does not tell you exactly how a garment will fit.

Choose according to the look and the occasion.

If you enjoy arranging layers and exploring different skirt and robe shapes, start with Hanfu. If you prefer to consider a single dress silhouette, explore Qipao and Cheongsam. Both groups include varied designs; neither label guarantees a particular fabric, level of formality or amount of room.

Use a different fitting checklist.

For a fitted dress, check bust, waist, hips and shoulders together, along with the hem and any opening. For a layered outfit, check each garment, including skirt position, sleeve length and how the layers sit over one another. In either case, make sure you can move, sit and walk comfortably.

Read our size and fit guide, then compare complete outfits with the separates in our Modern Chinese collection.

A better fit starts with a measurement

Go beyond the label.

Sizes vary between makers. Measure your bust, waist, hips and height, then compare them with the measurements for the exact garment.

01 / BustMeasure around the fullest part, keeping the tape level.
02 / WaistMeasure your natural waist without pulling the tape tight.
03 / HipsMeasure around the fullest part of your hips.
04 / LengthCheck garment length against your height and preferred shoes.

Fit varies between styles and makers. Confirm the product-specific garment measurements before ordering.
