SIZE & FIT

How to measure for Hanfu and Qipao.

A letter size is only a starting point. The same size label can mean different measurements between makers, and a fitted Qipao needs a different approach from a loose robe or an adjustable skirt.

Take your body measurements.

Use a flexible tape and measure over the light clothing or undergarments you expect to wear. Keep the tape level and close to your body without pulling it tight. Record the unit as well as the number; 1 inch equals 2.54 centimeters.

  1. Bust or chest: Measure around the fullest part, with your arms relaxed.
  2. Waist: Measure at your natural waist. For a skirt worn higher or lower, also measure where its waistband will sit.
  3. Hips: Measure around the fullest part, keeping your feet together.
  4. Shoulders and sleeves: Compare these with a similar garment that fits you comfortably, following the measurement method used in the product chart.
  5. Height and garment length: Note your height, footwear and preferred hem position. Compare the listed length with a garment you already own.

Body size is different from garment size.

A body chart describes the wearer. A finished-garment chart describes the clothing itself. Garments need room for movement, often called ease, so do not assume a dress with exactly your body measurements will fit comfortably. Check whether a chart gives a full circumference or a flat width.

Check the silhouette.

For a fitted Qipao, compare bust, waist, hips and shoulders together. For Hanfu, also consider sleeve width, skirt length, the waistband position and how the layers overlap. An adjustable fastening does not remove the need to check the other measurements.

Use the chart for the exact garment. Where product-specific measurements are not yet listed, sizing should be confirmed before ordering.
